Is It Worth Paying for a Car Buying Service in the Bay Area?

Short answer: for most Bay Area buyers purchasing a new car above $30,000, yes — the math works. The $295 flat fee is typically recovered several times over in savings. But there are specific situations where it makes less sense, and you deserve an honest answer about both.

When it's clearly worth it

You're buying a car above $30,000. The negotiating room on a $40,000–$70,000 vehicle is meaningfully larger than on an economy car. Howard's average client saves over $4,000 off MSRP — a 13x return on the $295 fee on an average deal.

You don't have time to do this yourself. Getting real competing quotes from multiple Bay Area dealers takes 5–10 hours across multiple weekends — phone calls, follow-up emails, dealer visits, and the mental overhead of keeping track of who said what. If your time is worth more than $30/hour, the math alone justifies it.

You dislike dealership negotiations. The Bay Area has some of the highest-volume car dealerships in the country. If the idea of sitting in a dealership while someone plays good cop/bad cop with you sounds exhausting, a broker eliminates that entirely.

You want a specific trim or color that requires sourcing across multiple dealers. Popular trims disappear fast. Howard checks inventory across a broader network than most buyers have access to.

When it makes less sense

You're buying a very high-demand car with no negotiating room. Some vehicles — particularly popular trims with waitlists — have little to no flexibility below MSRP regardless of who's asking. If your car falls into this category, Howard will tell you upfront.

You're already an experienced negotiator with industry connections. If you've done this before and have direct relationships with fleet managers, you may already be operating at the same level. Most buyers aren't in this category, but some are.

You're buying a used car. Car Buying Buddy works with new vehicles only. For used cars, the dynamics are different and Howard refers clients to his partner, Personal Car Shopper in Santa Clara.

The honest answer on ROI

At $295 for a service that averages $4,000+ in savings, the question isn't really "is it worth it" — it's "will it work for my specific car in the current market?" That's a question Howard can answer before you commit anything. The initial inquiry is free.
